October 24 Meeting Agenda

7 p.m. Show up, plug in, sit back. (You can bring libations if you like. We won’t tell your boss.)

7:30 p.m. Lightning talks and announcements
As always, anybody is encouraged to get up and do impromptu announcements and/or talks on tiny little subjects. We enforce a strict five-minute time limit. C’mon, anybody can be interesting for five minutes.

7:45 p.m. RubyConf 2006 Recap
Trotter Cashion & Jonathan Summer
In which Trotter & Jonathan guide us through an opinionated, selective sprint of three days in Denver, in about sixty minutes.

8:45 p.m. The API Construction Kit
Francis Hwang
Ruby offers a lot of tools—some easy, some advanced—for programmers to construct elegant APIs for reuse, whether that reuse is personal, confined within a single company, or for public consumption via an open source library or framework. I’ll go over method_missing, const_missing, and other tools in the Rubyist toolbelt that make this work possible. This will be a broad survey including real-world examples, with an eye towards elegance, practicality, shedding light on pitfalls, and workarounds.

This is a reprise of the talk I gave in September to the Seattle Ruby Brigade, thanks to the kind support of Geoffrey Grosenbach a.k.a.Topfunky.

So all that awaits you, in less than 24 hours. Be there or be statically typed—

Francis Hwang
